Mechanics
This is where you’ll find a short walkthrough of the different game mechanics for this game. These mechanics will also be explained in more detail during workshops before each LARP.
Cut and break
Why say “cut”:
-
If the situation you are in is extremely uncomfortable and you feel that some sort of limit has been breached.
-
If you get physically or mentally hurt to the point you need to be removed from play. This can be a physical injury, trauma response, or any other serious issue.
What should you do if you hear someone say “cut”:
-
Stop any and all play
-
Help to resolve the situation (if possible or necessary)
-
Step out of the situation if help is not wanted
-
Get in touch with an organizer and tell them someone cut, when and where.
When the situation is resolved, play can continue from the cut point, however avoid recreating the situation that caused the “cut”.
Why say “break”:
-
Whenever a situation becomes abit too intense
-
If you can tell you are close to being hurt
-
If you need the situation to be de-escalated
-
If you just don’t want the situation to escalate further
What should you do if you hear someone say “break”?
-
If you are part of the situation, think of it as someone saying “here, but no further”.
-
Don’t escalate, preferrably de-escalate slightly.
-
If you are not part of the situation, keep going as you were.
Endurance
Every player has a base pool of endurance. This can be increased through character development. It is the endurance number that decides how often you can use your Disciplines, how hard a fight affects you, and how high your physical prowess is.
When you reach 0 endurance, you are exhausted, and cannot use any Discipline. Any fight that begins while you are at 0 will automatically be lost, unless otherwise stated.
Endurance is regenerated by drinking blood. This regeneration will happen much quicker if the blood comes directly from the source.
It is well known in Bergen that any blood that comes from a glass or bottle during gatherings, is watered out. This is to show that the gatherings are a place for socialization and enjoyment, not a charity kitchen for the poor and hungry.
The Embrace
Embracing is the act in which a vampire transforms a human to a vampire. This will make them Sire and Childe. The Sire is the vampire, who will consequently be responsible for teaching the Childe the ways of the vampires.
In Bergen, each Family has their own tradition in regards to the Embrace, and it is seen as a great honour to be permitted to Embrace a Childe of your own. There will be more information about each Family’s tradition for Embracing, in the section about the Families.
For the purposes of the game mechanics, embracing a Childe requires the Sire to give the human so much of their blood that they end up with endurance 0.
Boons
Even though power is the ultimate value for vampires, there may be situations in which services, or Boons, are more valuable. Boons will only ever be repaid when they are performed, and if the person who holds the Boon should perish, the Boon will be transferred to their Childe or their Sire. The same goes for the person who has to pay the Boon.
There are different values of boons:
-
Trivial boons - requires no risk or cost
-
Could be to help someone get blood, for instance.
-
-
Small boon - Demands some effort, but not alot.
-
Could be to give another vampire housing for a short period of time.
-
-
Large boons - Not easily given, as the risk or cost will be great.
-
Could for instance be to give someone a part of your land permanently.
-
-
Death boons - these are extremely rare. These are only given when someone expects they will die. Comes with great risk or cost.
-
This means the Boon giver owes the Boon holder their life.
-
Combat
Combat, or physical altercations during the larp could be a pre-planned event, or something that comes to play during the larp. When these sort of conflicts appear, the players involved have to have an off game discussion to plan the events.
Requirements:
-
Everyone involved must be willing participants.
-
Discuss the event as players in hushed tones to make sure everyone is on board with what’s gonna happen.
-
If it’s an event that is planned for later during the day, all must agree on a trigger that every part of the conflict knows when the conflict is happening.
-
Every participant loses 1 endurance to participate in the fight.
Blood
Vampires need blood to survive. Some clans have certain requirements that must be met if they are to feed. This is clearly stated in the clan information. During BnB - Bloodlines games, there might sometimes be “blood” in the bar, and this is almost always watered out, and can never give more than 1 endurance throughout the whole night.
Vampires may bring their own humans to gatherings, if the inviting Family allows it. These “bloodbags” belong to the vampire that owns it, and any action taken by these humans will reflect on the vampire’s standing.
